One in two Italians bought or sold used items in 2021. The second hand market in Italy represents 1.4% of the national GDP, for an economic value of 24 billion euros. The trend also affects gardening, both as regards the sale of machines for the care of greenery, and for hobby equipment.

According to BVA Doxa research data, the value generated by the user market in 2021 was 24 billion euros (1.4% of GDP). 52% of Italians (23 million) bought / sold used items; 15% did it for the first time. 66% of those who bought used goods started researching from used cars: the second hand is therefore not a "second choice", but a real lifestyle.
The real strength of the second han turns out to be the online which produces 50% of the total turnover (11.8 billion euros): the experience of buying and selling online is appreciated by most users because it can be conducted directly from home and offers a wider choice.
WHAT YOU BUY
The Doxa observatory study takes into consideration the categories of best-selling items. The volumes of engines stand out (11.5 billion), followed by home and person (5.7 billion), electronics, hobbies (2.6 billion). The market has more than doubled its value, also benefiting from the post-pandemic effect.
WHO BUY
Compared to the public, the choice of second-hand equipment is preferred by Graduates (68%), Gen Z (66%), 35-44 years (70%) and Families with children (68%).
WHY
The Italians have discovered in the sale of used objects a way to get rid of the superfluous and make room in the house or garage, but also to have an extra source of income: the Doxa data estimates that those who sold used items in the last year received a average of 1,121 euros.
Even for those who buy it is a question of saving, but not only: buying used products is considered a smart and sustainable behavior that allows you to give objects a second life, contributing to a circular economy.
