Designing the garden: competition of ideas

The Asilo Bianco Cultural Association is launching a new competition of prize ideas for architects, agronomists, landscape architects, environmental artists to redesign three public green areas in the municipalities of Briga Novarese, Miasino and Orta San Giulio, in the province of Novara.
The competition, sponsored by the Order of Architects of Novara and Verbano Cusio Ossola and in collaboration with the Verbano Editoria & Giardini review, aims to involve expert designers to rethink and promote the recovery and enhancement of the areas in the three municipalities on Lake Orta. . It involves rethinking the coverage of a multi-storey car park overlooking the lake in Orta San Giulio, the historic garden of Villa Nigra in Miasino and the Uriänòl park in Briga Novarese.
"Designing the garden" becomes the opportunity to design green areas and thus create new spaces for meeting and socializing in the open. Places that are very necessary, even and especially in times of Covid, where the return to nature, to the outdoors and to greenery is vital for each of us.
The competition announcement contains some indications for framing the projects in the landscape and rethinking each area, leaving each participant (or group of participants) the opportunity to range and work on different solutions, also playing with the themes of green design and green architecture , without forgetting issues of landscape integration, sustainability and green maintenance.
For the winning project of each area there is a prize of 1,000 Euros. There will also be special mentions chosen by the three municipalities involved, as well as reports by Asilo Bianco for the best Under 35 projects. The works will be evaluated by an international jury composed of Elisabetta Bianchessi (president of the jury), landscape architect, professor of Architecture at the Universities of Lisbon, Madrid and the Polytechnic of Milan, creator of T12-Lab, an action research agency for relational and social design projects, public space and landscape design, Elena Bertinotti, architect who works mainly in the field of design environmental with public bodies and administrations and has carried out numerous projects of open spaces, Federica Cornalba, architect who has been involved in Landscape Architecture & Garden Design for years, designs gardens, manages educational and didactic paths on the themes of landscape and cultural heritage, Michael Jakob , Professor of Landscape History and Theory at the Polytechnic University of Lausanne (EPFL) and the Geneva-Lullier School of Engineering, has published numerous books on the subject of landscape.
The deadline for submitting projects is 20 March 2021. On Saturday 15 May the winners will be awarded at Villa Nigra where a public exhibition with some of the selected projects will be inaugurated. The exhibition will remain open until the ninth edition of Menta e Rosmarino - Green Festival (29-30 May).

"Designing the garden" is part of the activities foreseen by the "Lago d'Orta Plastic Revolution" project, financed by the Cariplo Foundation, which involves the Legambiente club "Gli Amici del Lago", Asilo Bianco, the Municipalities of Ameno, Briga Novarese , Miasino, Orta San Giulio and the Briga Volunteer Organization; and the Italy-Switzerland Cooperation Project "Di-Se - DiSegnare il Territorio" by the Ossola Museums Association, Museumzentrum La Caverna di Naters and Asilo Bianco.
